This guide answers the popular question: How do I change a flat tire?
If you find yourself with a flat tire, it may be intimidating to change your tire. To get your vehicle to a repair shop, you first need to install your spare tire. Most vehicles are provided with a spare tire, also known as a temporary tire or “donut.”
This helpful how-to guide will walk you through the step-by-step process of changing a flat tire on your vehicle.
Step 1: Move to a safe area
While it’s not always possible to move your vehicle with a flat tire, nor is it recommended to drive with a flat tire, do your best to maneuver your vehicle to a safe and level area. If you are on a busy road, pull as far off the road as possible to keep yourself and other vehicles safe. Always turn your emergency flashers on.
Step 2: Locate a spare tire
Your spare tire and jack are usually located in the trunk of your vehicle. Most models store these two items in a compartment underneath the floor of the trunk.
Step 3: Remove the hubcap and lug nuts
If your vehicle has a hubcap covering the lug nuts, remove it first. Car jacks that are stored in the spare tire compartment of your vehicle usually have a built-in lug wrench. After the hubcap is removed, use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the wheel. Place the lug wrench onto each nut and apply pressure to the handle in a counterclockwise fashion.
Step 4: Jack the car up & remove the tire
Position the jack on your vehicle’s frame. Turn the jack in a clockwise fashion until it meets the vehicle. Use the handle of the jack to continue to turn in a clockwise fashion until the flat tire is several inches above the ground. Grip the flat tire and pull it towards you, off the wheel.
Step 5: Install the spare
Place your spare tire onto the wheel by lining up the holes with the bolts. Place the lug nuts back onto the bolts and turn them in a clockwise fashion until they are tight.
Step 6: Lower the vehicle
Finally, bring the vehicle down to the ground and remove the jack once the spare tire is securely on the ground.
