This article answers the popular question: What is Automatic Emergency Braking & how does it work? This part 2 articles talks through some of the most commonly asked questions.

Q: Do AEB systems prevent every crash?

A: No. Factors such as speed, darkness, following distance, or proximity of the vehicle in front of you can all impact how well the AEB system works to prevent a crash. These systems do not guarantee that you’ll avoid a collision. At a minimum, they slow your vehicle to reduce the severity of the crash or impact.

Rear-end collision – Automatic emergency braking systems can’t always prevent a rear-end collision, but may lessen the severity.

Faster speeds – If you are driving at speeds faster than normal highway speeds, automatic emergency braking may not be able to stop you, but will be able to help your car slow down enough to lessen the impact.

Following distance – If you are driving within an unsafe following distance, the vehicle technology may not have time to react.

Q: Does every vehicle have automatic emergency braking?

A: Not yet. According to Car & Driver, many new cars have AEB as part of their ADAS driver assistance packages, but now the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is proposing that every new passenger vehicle have AEB tech by the end of the decade. That means it will be 2028 or 2029 before AEB tech is required in all vehicles.

Q: What are Rear Automatic Emergency Braking systems?

A: AEB-Rear sensors will apply the brakes automatically to prevent a collision or reduce impact force while the car is traveling in Reverse. While not all cars are equipped with both forward AEB and rear AEB systems, the rear AEB systems help detect smaller objects such as people, curbs, or light poles when your vehicle is in reverse.

Q: Does AEB detect smaller objects on the road?

A: Not all automatic emergency braking systems are capable of detecting motorcycles, bicycles, or other smaller vehicles such as ATVs, golf carts, or small trailers. You should never fully rely on a safety feature such as automatic emergency braking to help prevent you from being in a crash. Being aware of your surroundings 100% of the time is the best way to avoid an accident!
