This is Part 1 of a two-part series that answers all your questions about your vehicle’s brake fluid.

Q: What is brake fluid?

A: It is a type of hydraulic fluid used in hydraulic braking systems to transfer force into pressure, bringing the vehicle to a complete stop when the brakes are pushed in.

Q: What does it do?

A: Brake fluid serves a few main purposes: It helps your car stop and prevents rust and corrosion by keeping your car’s braking system lubricated.

Q: How does it help your car slow down?

A: Speaking mechanical language, when you press your foot on your brake pedal, a rod forces a piston into the cylinder. This creates new pressure throughout the entire hydraulic brake system. This pressure is distributed throughout the braking system by forcing the fluid throughout the brake lines into the caliper pistons.

Q: How does brake fluid prevent rust and corrosion?

A: Brake fluids are great at absorbing moisture. Additionally, it lubricates all the moving parts and components of your car’s braking system and soaks up any moisture in your vehicle’s braking system to prevent corrosion and rust.

Q: How often should I check my brake’s fluid?

A: Every car is a little different, so check your manual for accurate timing. Most mechanics will check brake fluid any time a vehicle undergoes an oil change.

Q: How often does fluid in the brakes need flushed?

A: In general, brake fluid flushes are recommended every 30,000 miles or every two years.
