If I have a red liquid under my car is it my power steering fluid?

Maybe. Depending on the brand and type of fluids there are other red fluids that could be in your car. You’ll want an experienced technician to evaluate what the fluid is and which system it’s coming from.

Red fluid could be:

  • Power Steering Fluid
  • Coolant
  • Automatic Transmission Fluid

Vehicles run with several different colored liquids. The color of the liquid is the fastest way to determine what system is broken.

Is it dangerous to drive with a power steering leak?

Yes. The vehicle’s power steering system is essential for driving. If you have sounds, leaks, or function issues starting it will progressively break while the vehicle is in motion. You could be turning onto the freeway when it locks for example. Ignoring problems with a faulty power steering system is dangerous.

Check Your Power Steering Fluid During Oil Changes

Frequently having your mechanic check your power steering fluid on visits is a great way to verify the health of your steering. Routine checks and maintenance are the best way to ensure your car is safe on the road. This is another reason to have a mechanic do your oil changes instead of an oil change station. Make sure you’re communicating with your automotive mechanic specialist about what you want them to check and make sure you’re adding power steering fluid and system to the list.
